During the last 80 years, all kinds of events took place on the Nurburgring, from minor local races to top world wide ones. Before WW2, the first bike and cars GPs were held on the circuit. And during the post war period, it was then F1 and bike championship, alongside with endurance races, like the famous 1000 km of the Nurburgring and their wonderful prototypes. Talking about all those events would require to write numerous books, so following pages will only talk about the history of the track itself.

First of all, note that from the beginning, the Nurburgring was designed for 3 distinct purposes :

- for races

- to be a test track for german manufacturers

- for a public use.

The first two points apply to every permanent track. But the third is not so common, and may explain why anyone can still use the Nordschleife so easily in our days.
